Dr. George R. Kast, DDS, MS
Bachelors Degree (BA from Miami University, Oxford, Ohio)
Dr. Kast started his collegiate career at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. He enjoyed numerous intramural activities at Miami University while studying Zoology. Knowing dentistry was his career choice, he was involved with the pre-dental club early. Being the avid soccer player, Dr. Kast played on the club soccer team each year. He was chosen by his teammates to serve as the president of the club in his final year, where he orchestrated try-outs, practices and arranged the games between the various schools such as Bowling Green, Ohio State, Dennison, etc. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Miami University in 1988, graduating Cum Laude.
Dental Degree (DDS from The Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio).
Following just three years of undergraduate studies at Miami University, Dr. Kast achieved early acceptance into dental school at Ohio State University. He attended Ohio State University School of Dentistry from 1987 through 1991. He graduated from dental school with honors, being nominated to the Omicron Kappa Upsilon national dental honor society http://www.oku.org/. This honor is reserved for students in the top 10% of their class who rank highest in scholarship for the entire period that they have been in attendance. Dr. Kast continued his intramural sports activities while in school and also did a great deal of research on orthodontic bonding. He served as President to the Ohio State Dental Research Group and nationally as Secretary of the National Student Dental Research Group.
Masters Degree / Orthodontic Certificate (MS from The Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio).
After spending three years as a practicing General Dentist, Dr. Kast returned to school to learn the specialty of orthodontics. Acceptance into the field of orthodontics is an honor in itself due to the difficulty of being accepted into a program. The specialty is typically represented by the finest students in dental school. Dr. Kast spent three years in the full time, accredited orthodontic residency program at Ohio State University. During this time, he received his Masters Degree as well as his orthodontic specialty certificate. His Masters thesis centered around soft tissue facial esthetics and the influence orthodontics has upon the face. This thesis allowed him to tie his passion for art and beauty with the science of orthodontics.
Dr. Kast practiced general dentistry for 3 years following dental school, prior to orthodontic training. This experience has benefitted his knowledge base in treating the patient comprehensively. His first year following dental school was spent in an advanced general dentistry program at the Cleveland Clinic. There he was exposed to top-notched, quality based, high end, and hospital based dentistry. Dr. Kast spent his second year as a general dentist working in a Cleveland area group practice. There, he was exposed to the multitude of managed patient care systems. In his final year as a general dentist, Dr. Kast worked as the Dental Director at the Marysville Correctional Facility. There he witnessed the dental and medical systems for treating those incarcerated.
Dr. Kast enjoyed his three years practicing general dentistry. Each year was widely different and he was able to expose himself to all forms of dentistry. This great experience ranged from treating royalty at the Cleveland Clinic with highly customized prosthetics to treating inmates at Marysville Reformatory for Women with limited means. This unique path has taught him to relate to people of all types. It also allows him to relate with dentists in all the realms of dentistry. This relationship with the general dentist is crucial to quality care of the patient.
Dr. Kast continues to take continuing education courses in dentistry with an emphasis on orthodontics. He attends the local Cleveland Society of Orthodontics meetings regularly as well as the American Association of Orthodontists meetings. His continuing education hours far surpass the required 40 hours over each two year period. He is heavily involved in a local orthodontic study group where he works with some of the finest orthodontists in the Cleveland\Akron\Youngstown area. This group works to develop the most excellent practices by continuously improving and staying on the cutting edge with developing technologies.
Dr. Kast served as the orthodontist on the Cranio-Facial team at MetroHealth Hospital during the years 1997 through 2004. He continues to play a role with the Craniofacial team at MetroHealth in the treatment of children born with Cleft Lip and Cleft Palate as well as other unfortunate syndromes. During his time at MetroHealth Hospital, Dr. Kast was considered an associate professor at Case Western Reserve University.
Dr. Kast is a member of the Cleveland Society of Orthodontists and was nominated by his peers to serve on the board of the Society in 2003. Each year on the board he has played a larger role. He has served as Peer Review Chairman, Program Chairman, Secretary/Treasure, Vice President and this culminated with his presidency in the 2008-2009 term.
